Driving And Sneezing!

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008
BOSTON, Mass. – An untimely sneeze nearly cost Andrew Hanson his life. The 42 year old Weymouth man told authorities that a sneeze caused him to lose control of his pickup on Soldiers Field Road and plunge into Boston's Charles River on Tuesday.

Hanson was able to wade to shore after escaping from the truck, which was partially submerged in 4 feet of water. He was not seriously injured but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Lawrence Callahan of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation said Hanson told him that after he sneezed, "the next thing he knew he was in the river."

Dog Driving!

Friday, November 7th, 2008
Here's a lesson for those who like to keep their vehicles clean - never take your dog with you when you're at the car wash. A Pryor, Oklahoma man learned that lesson the hard way on Thursday, after he left his pooch inside his automobile while he was busy cleaning it at one of those do it yourself places.

The 70 lb. pit bull named Killys got restless while his best friend was taking care of business, jumped in the front seat and somehow shifted the car into reverse. The vehicle then started moving, headed onto the highway, drove in a loop for a minute or two, and finally came to a stop in one of the car wash's automated lanes.

Witness Mark Walker was startled when he thought he saw a dog at the wheel. "I heard somebody yell. I walked out the front door and seen a car come off the four lane backwards and into the automatic bay. As soon as I looked around the corner I saw the dog in the car."

No one was hurt and amazingly, nothing was hit. But the owner lost his car anyway when police coming to check out the report of a vehicle being driven by a dog found the man had no proof of insurance.

The officer involved, Brent Crittenden, admits his paperwork was a little odd, "It made my report quite easy because the driver information was all blank and I didn't have to fill that out."

Driving Mom to The Bar!

Friday, August 15th, 2008
LONGVIEW, Texas — A 35 year old Texas woman has been jailed after police say she made her 12 year old daughter drive her to a bar.

Police in Longview say they watched a minivan turn into a driveway without signaling on Wednesday and bump into a home at a low speed. They say the car was driven by Jennifer Lynn Rosenberg's daughter.

Police say the girl told an officer she had just dropped her mother off at a bar. They say they found Rosenburg at the bar and that she admitted having her daughter drive her there.

Rosenburg remains in the Gregg County Jail on a $2,500 bond. A jail official declined to say whether she had an attorney.

A spokeswoman for Child Protective Services told the Longview News Journal that the agency is investigating.

Blood In My Alcohol!

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - State police say they arrested a man early Tuesday whose blood alcohol level was 0.491 percent, the highest ever recorded in Rhode Island for someone who wasn't dead.

Stanley Kobierowski was taken to a hospital, put in the detoxification unit and sedated, said Maj. Steven O'Donnell. He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, and he was released after promising to appear Friday at a court hearing.

"The person's lucky they survived," O'Donnell said. "There's no doubt he would have gotten killed or killed someone if he had continued on the route he was taking."

A phone listing for Kobierowski could not be found, and he did not have a lawyer in court Tuesday.

Kobierowski, 34, of North Providence, was arrested after he drove into a highway message board on Interstate 95 in Providence, O'Donnell said.

After police arrived, Kobierowski had trouble getting out of the car, then grabbed it and refused to move, forcing troopers to carry him to the breakdown lane before taking him back to their barracks, O'Donnell said.

Driving Grandma’s Car!

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008
Muncie, Ind. - A 7 year old boy drove his grandmother's car more than a mile to a shopping mall before another motorist blocked the car and took the keys, police said.

Several motorists called police around 9 a.m. Tuesday to report a small child driving toward Muncie Mall on the city's north side. The boy was so small that some motorists could not see anyone behind the wheel, Police Chief Deborah Davis said.

"I'm kind of amazed at the whole thing," she said.

Matthew Sands of Hartford City said he followed the Geo Tracker into the mall parking lot and tried to block the boy from leaving as he drove into some bushes and a tree. Sands said the boy backed the car into his vehicle before he was able to get the keys away from him.

"He was awful small to be driving," said Sands.

Child welfare workers were called to investigate the case, Davis said. She did not immediately know whether the boy was returned to his family.

Drinking & Driving, On My Cooler!

Friday, June 6th, 2008
Leslie J. "Bomber" Marr learned this the hard way when he was arrested on Memorial Day in Whitehall, NY and charged with DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle after police saw him swerving around the streets and driving on the sidewalk, on a cooler.

Marr was driving around town on a Cruizin' Cooler, which puts a seat on top of a three wheeled cooler and attaches an electric motor similar to those found on electric scooters. It even has a hatch so you can pull out a icy cold drink while driving. The hatch also has a cup/can holder on top, suggesting that this sort of activity is exactly what the designers had in mind.

Under state law, however, the cooler is still considered a motor vehicle so sobriety is a must, and a license is highly recommended.
